Take the Island of Misfit Library Technology Quiz

June 7, 2011 by Travis Jonker   13 comments

Usually I keep a strict children’s lit focus in these pages, but you know the old saying “write what you know about outdated technology”.

My school libraries are doing a technology deep clean this summer and we’re deciding what stays and what goes. Take the quiz below to test your knowledge of some school library technology:

This is a total hoot. Are you SURE you weren’t rummaging around in my AV cabinets? I even have the same colored dots on the cassette players!

And I can’t throw away the last filmstrip projector because the kindergarten teacher uses it to candle eggs!

    Thanks for posting this.

Got a good laugh out of this one. Thanks!

LOL–yes, I can name all of these items–this could be a class: The History of AV

Alas, all of them were all too familiar! We still have to keep the PA system for one award presentation done each spring in the library!

A few months ago, I got rid of most of our clip art books. Remember them? Back when clip art came in books that one actually cut and pasted into documents, like with scissors and glue? (Well, I always favored tape–fewer shadows and all.)

Ha – yes, I actually just found a bunch of those the other day! I figured we wouldn’t be needing them. I also came across one book of clip art that was to be used with the ditto machine – it had that purple haze all over it. I have a good time looking through that stuff.

Oh the purple monster as we used to call them. Purple ink all over our hands and kids smelling the dittos 🙂

This was so funny. I still have teachers who use the cassette players. Also, I use the old cameras for the news show as feeder cameras and believe it or not the old digital Sony with the discs.

OMG! This is stuff I’ve been discarding for the last couple of years, too. The winner was the hulking opaque projector that had a platform big enough for only a single piece of paper.

    June 13, 2011 at 10:18 am

I think you need to post some of that purple haze clip art!

Love the “some don’t work” label. So why was it kept? Why? Why? (I’ve been struggling with my own A/V closet lately as well)

    • Travis says

      June 21, 2011 at 8:09 pm

Ha – not sure. It was buried for a while, and no one had looked at it for a while.
