Okay this is crazy, right? Here on the shorter shelves, this is our Everybody section (a.k.a. picture books), and behind that is our fiction section. That’s where you’ll find our longer books. And you know I had to get that Yuyi Morales READ poster! And shout out to Loren Long – the cardboard model of his Yellow Bus has been a hit with the kids. Now we have all these books in order by author last name – nothing crazy, nothing crazy, MTV!
But you gotta check out our latest addition . . .

I’m not really a car guy, MTV – I prefer the yacht lifestyle. I picked this up . . . well, actually from my dad. Shout out dad! You know we had to put it front and center in the library.
But now things are going to start to get wild, MTV . . .

Our nonfiction section. I call it the truth section. A couple years back we got a little nuts and went and genrefied the whole thing. We used the Follett system. I know, I know – that takes a crazy amount of time. But it was worth it, MTV! It makes more sense now. Kids like it when things make sense.
Before we leave the nonfiction section, check this out . . .

Dinos and gemstones! We like to display these next to books about dinos and gems, so kids can find what they’re looking for!
Oh, dang, I almost forgot about these . . .

Buckets! This is back near our Everybody section. We only have the nonfiction section genrefied, but there are some fiction topics that kids ask for so often, we put them into these buckets to save time – stuff like Marvel, Unicorns, Princesses. These can have books from different sections – you might see an early reader, picture book, and nonfiction book all next to each other. It gets pretty wild!
Oh man, I forgot to show you the Early Reader section, MTV! Here it is.

Where the magic happens: kids checking out Early Reader books and learning to read all on their own. These are organized by author last name (I told you, MTV – the only genrefied section we have is nonfiction!)
Oh, but we do have some buckets over in nonfiction too, though:

You know the brands, MTV. By popular demand.
We still have a few periodicals:

We’ve got a growing graphic novel section:

And a spinning rack for new books:

You know we have music from a vintage CD boombox, MTV!

And I like to come over to our story area sometimes, just look and the clouds, and think about life, you know?

I didn’t even get a chance to tell you about our library mural! But we’re out of time.
Okay, MTV – thanks for visiting our library crib.
Now get out of here!

Thank you for sharing your space: it’s a really nice one!
In the non fiction section that you genrefied, what is used as a call number? Is it only the “category” sticker (sports, the arts, animals…) and then you class them on the shelves as you see fit or do you have subcategories stickers or names (felidae, snakes, farm animals…) to help for shelving?
Thanks
Great question Julie. At the beginning of the genrefying process we had to make a few decisions to reduce the workload (genrefying is a pretty huge undertaking). One of those was that we weren’t going to remove all the spine labels and redo them. We added the Follett genre stickers to the spine, and added the genre category to the book record, but we left the old Dewey/author last name spine label. So within each section, we do have the books in order by the dewey number. Let me know if you need more info!
