Endangered Series #31: Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls

Popularity comes, popularity goes. As librarians we’re always balancing between what will circulate like crazy and what we need to have in the collection. And we’re not the Library of Congress – we can’t (and shouldn’t) keep everything.
An endangered series is one that appears to be waning in terms of popularity. But popularity isn’t everything. Should it stay, or should it go? Or think of it this way – if you were starting a library today, would this series make the cut? Let’s discuss.

Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls (series) by Meg Cabot
This series by Meg Cabot spanned six books, published from the late 2000s to early 2010s. It follows elementary schooler Allie as she navigates a new school and friends. Classic realistic fiction stuff.
The Case for Keeping: Well-made realistic fiction with girl protagonists is a category you don’t want to be lacking on your shelves.
The Case for Not: As is the case for so many, this series doesn’t get many checkouts in our school library these days. It’s tough to determine why. Could it be the peak aughts cover art? The lack of illustrations? The cursive writing on the front and back covers that kids don’t know how to read anymore?
Refresh? While this series doesn’t have any updated covers, there are some other similar series that might be appealing:

My Verdict: This series is currently still on our shelf, but will likely be weeded in the near future.
How are you handing this series in your library?
