Newbery/Caldecott 2011 on Goodreads: Vote for your Favorite
Vegas really needs start taking bets for the Newbery and Caldecott award winners – if for no other reason than I’d like to boast to all the serious gamblers that “I just threw down mad loot on Flora’s Very Windy Day“.
If you’re interested in handicapping the race thus far, you should check out the Newbery 2011 and 2011 Caldecott Hopefuls lists on Goodreads. People add outstanding titles to the list and vote for their top books of the year. The result is every librarian’s dream – a ranked list of the books getting buzz. Last week on NPR’s morning edition they mentioned that the British bookmaker Ladbrokes posts odds and takes bets on the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. I think they do the same for the Man Booker Prize and the Costa (formerly the Whitbread) award. I’m sure it would not be too much of a stretch see an American bookmaker post odds on the Newbery (that is if said firm thought it could take in enough bets).
As for tomorrow’s NBA announcements I’m expecting The Dreamer to get a nod. I’m also curious to see if Rita Williams-Garcia can get back to back nominations. Woodson did it in 02 & 03, and Steig did it in 72 & 73 so there is some precedence. With poet Hope Anita Smith on the judging panel i think One Crazy Summer and The Dreamer are pretty good bets.
