On Hold @ the Library: September ’10

October 1, 2010 by Travis Jonker   2 comments

The first month of my 2010-11 school year is almost in the bag, so it’s time to exhume the monthly feature known as On Hold @ the Library. For first-timers, this is where I show you the books that are on hold at one of the schools where I work.

What follows is a completely unfiltered look at the books kids are lining up to read at my 5th and 6th grade school. Not too many surprises this time out.

Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan.

This series has remained quietly popular over the years. Not a hold shelf mainstay, but certainly a regular visitor. nonetheless.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney.

A hold shelf mainstay.

The Emperor’s Code (39 Clues, Book 6) by Gordan Korman.

The 39 Clues series refuses to dip in popularity. My students will be happy to see there’s The 39 Clues: Cahills vs. Vespers series coming out in March.

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

I recently added a deluxe, 25th Anniversary edition to the collection (see above), and it’s been catching some eyes – cool to see.

The Titans Curse (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 3) by Rick Riordan.

Since everyone knows about this one, let’s take a look at the UK cover:

Seems less “children’s lit” don’t you think?

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo.

Fact: this book is always on hold. Kids love it. If this isn’t in your collection yet, make sure you add it before the Steven Spielberg film adaptation hits theaters August 10, 2011.

Look for more books on hold next month.

Nice! At my school library it seems like War Horse has really been boosted by kids word of mouth, so hopefully that gets rolling where you’re at also.
