Video: The Giving Tree – Fo’ Real
While I don’t think it was necessarily intended, children’s book author Amy Krouse Rosenthal (Duck! Rabbit!, Little Hoot) makes Shel Silverstein’s beloved (polarizing?) book a reality – by tying dollar bills to the limbs of a small tree.
When it comes down to it, there isn’t much children’s lit in this clip – but don’t you want to see what happens?

Really interesting sociological experiment. I found it rather surprising — and inspiring — that those who DID take the money only took a dollar or two ratther than strip the tree bare. Wonder if that was due to the neighborhood location or the sense that the subjects were being watched or…
I’m with you, Linda – I thought someone would clean it out. But I think your comment is correct – if you’re walking down the street and see money on a tree, many people would assume it’s fake or a prank. Either way, they’re likely to keep on walkin’
The charming messages you put on the bills may have reminded the passers-by that a human being put that money on the tree. I know reading those one-liners would have made me smile. I think I would have read several, then taken the one that tickled my fancy the most.
