Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray, illustrated by Mike Lowery
There are lots of modern takes on classic fairytales where there really isn’t much different from the original. It’s rare when a retelling feels fresh. Gingerbread Man Loose in the School manages to feel fresh while keeping all the frenetic energy and suspense of the traditional story.
When rhyming books work, they can be some of the most fun to read aloud. The rhyme scheme here is a joy to read, funny, and flawless. Mike Lowery’s childlike illustrations are essential, adding humor and giving the story a real sense of place.
Every time I read this one with kids, I’m glad I did. A hall-of-famer for sure.
