The Unexpecteds: 5 Sneakily Popular Books in My K-3 Library

May 28, 2024 by Travis Jonker   Leave a Comment

I feel the need to start out this post defensively.

Look, when I say “sneakily popular” I’m not saying “I have no idea why kids are checking these books out.”

Far from it.

I’m calling them sneakily popular because they are books that are getting checked out a lot at my school library that you might not see all the time. Today I’m highlighting five such books.

In no particular order:

Pinky and Rex and the Perfect Pumpkin by James Howe, illustrated by Melissa Sweet.

I didn’t expect to see this one among the most checked out early reader books in our library, but students are always suckers for a good seasonal book, and chances are this one saw the most action in the fall.

Knots (Show-How Guides) by Keith Zoo.

I’ve mentioned the Show-How Guides series before on this blog, and the fact that a book about tying knots was among our most checked out books this year is a testament to how much kids like this series of little guidebooks.

Flip Flap Dogs by Nikki Dyson

It’s pretty obvious why this book got huge checkouts this year. If you add it to your collection, I bet the same thing will happen at your library.

The Nosyhood by Tim Lahan

This is one of the most unique books in our collection and it always gets grabbed whenever it’s on the shelf. If you can get a copy, you should.

Monster Friends by Kaeti Vandorn

This graphic novel isn’t that old, but it has risen to near the top of our graphic novel checkouts. I always add new titles hoping they’ll take off, and this one has. Sneakily.
