Cover Curiosity: Creepy Forest
If (nay, when) they create a children’s literature Hall of Fame, Creepy Forest will be one of the first inductees in the category of Settings, right after Farm and before School. Before I get out of hand with this, let’s take a look at the latest pair of separated-at-birth covers. A big thank you to Alison Eckes (and, looking back at her Little, Brown Spring Preview, A Fuse #8 Production) for the tip.

The black silhouettes, the branches, the title placement – similarities confirmed.

BHP* (circa 1996) I wrote a book on teaching fantasy literature. The cover is in this style and was first done in elegant black and white (a la Arthur Rackham and others of his time), but once they got wind of the association some made with fantasy literature and bad things they changed it to blue and white:

Guess it isn’t really a creepy forest though.

There was a picture book from a few years ago that had a similar cover as well… I can’t think of the title and it is driving me completely nuts. I can’t think of how to spell the author’s last name, either. Nick… Sherratt? Sharratt? I’ve tried to look it up with no luck. Anyway, now I just sound like an airhead. =)

I finally figured out my book, but it really isn’t all that creepy… just foggy. Oh well, for what it’s worth:

I’m currently reading Ghost Dog Secrets by Peg Kehret and it also has the creepy forest cover. Not as similar as both covers you’ve shown but pretty close.

Sally Nicholls’ Season of Secrets is my next read. While the cover is not meant to be creepy, we do have the eyes in the trees thing going on and I thought of your post: http://www.amazon.com/Season-Secrets-Sally-Nicholls/dp/054521825X/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1311764582&sr=1-3

I absolutely love your blog and find a lot of your post’s to be exactly I’m looking for.
can you offer guest writers to write content to suit your
needs? I wouldn’t mind producing a post or elaborating on most of the subjects you write about here.
Again, awesome website!
