Exclusive Excerpt: Chance: Escape from the Holocaust by Uri Shulevitz

In the realm of picture book making, Uri Shulevitz is one of the best to ever do it. Yes, the guy has Caldecotts (one medal and three honors), but maybe even more impactful has been his influence on the picture book makers who have arrived on the scene after him. You want to learn more about how picture books work? Find a copy of Shulevitz’s seminal Writing With Pictures – that will blow your hair back.
His latest book is different in a few ways. For one it’s a true story. It’s also not a picture book (although it is illustrated). And lastly, it’s for middle grade readers. Chance: Escape from the Holocaust tells the story of how Uri and his family evaded the Nazis and fled from Warsaw to the Soviet Union during World War II.
