Newbery/Caldecott 2017: Checking In
Every now and then I like to check out the latest Mock Newbery and Caldecott lists on Goodreads. Are they official guides to the books that are under discussion/might win? No. Just some lists voted on by interested readers. They are often pretty predictive, however. For instance, take a look at the top two books on last year’s Mock Newbery list – Echo and The War That Saved My Life – both walked away with honors.
So, just for fun, let’s have a look at the top 15 on each list…

The Night Gardener is by Canadian brothers, I believe, so that one is ineligible. 🙁
I’m glad you brought this one up, Benji – I’ve heard conflicting views on the eligibility of The Night Gardener. But my intel says the Bros. Fan are duel US/Canada citizens, which would make them eligible even though they reside in Canada.
Interesting. I hadn’t heard that. If so, that’s awesome news!
I’m feeling The Wild Robot.
I have been reading some of the mock newberry books. I hated Wolf Hollow as a personal reader but I can see an audience for it. I loved The Wild Robot very much–it is very different. I am meh for Raymie Nightingale.
Paper Wishes is a lovely, poetic and poignant book! I’m thrilled to see it here on the mock Newbery list!!
SO happy to see Fogliano’s “…TOMATOES” on the list…a breath of fresh words.
You need to add AS BRAVE AS YOU by Jason Reynolds to your Newbery list.
I was “meh” on Raymie Nightingale until I listened to the superb audiobook. I went back and re-read the book and am now in love.
This is already a tough Caldecott list to trim down, and it’s only June! I am a huge fan of the Fan Brothers, and I hope they qualify for consideration on The Night Gardener. Dan Santat is an amazing artist, and Molly Idle makes gorgeous wordless picture books. Of course, there’s the talented Salina Yoon, Lauren Castillo, and Yuyi Morales. So many choices here. But don’t even get me started on potential Newbery contenders. Pax, Wolf Hollow, and Booked have wowed me this year. Thanks Travis!
I adored “All Rise for the Honorable Perry T. Cook” as well as “Hour of the Bees”
The picture heading this article in SLJ’s Extra Helping shows The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier, an excellent chapter book currently nominated for the Rebecca Caudill award in Illinois. I’m sure not the first time these two titles have been confused.
Interesting for me. I”ll read it further.
