Thank you, Travis, for showing us how to make spine poems. (I can tell you are a great teacher.) Although I enjoyed the creative break making my own spine poem (the war poem posted above) afterwards I asked the boys–ages 8 & 12–to make their own spine poems from books in their boat bookcase. Erik and David love to read, but recently I read a fb post by a mother whose teen son was lamenting having to read and write poetry for a class assignment. I figured I better ward off future resistance toward writing poetry. I’ve read many poetry books to the boys, but this was their first effort at writing a poem. Thank you for this terrific idea!
